Overview

Wiremen are skilled tradespeople responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical wiring systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. They ensure that electrical systems operate safely and efficiently, adhering to local codes and regulations.


Duties

Electrical Installation

  • Install and connect electrical wiring systems, including conduits, panels, switches, and outlets, according to blueprints and specifications.
  • Assist in designing electrical circuits and layouts based on project requirements and load calculations.

Maintenance and Repair

  • Diagnose electrical issues and malfunctions by using diagnostic tools and techniques to identify problems within wiring systems.
  • Perform repairs on faulty wiring, electrical components, and equipment, ensuring that systems are restored to full functionality.

Safety Compliance

  • Ensure all installations and repairs comply with local electrical codes and safety standards, including the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Follow all safety protocols and procedures, using personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintaining a safe work environment to prevent accidents and injuries.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with other tradespeople, such as electricians, electricians’ helpers, and construction workers, to complete projects on time and within budget.
  • Communicate effectively with clients to explain electrical systems, provide updates on work progress, and address any concerns.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, including installation details, repairs made, and materials used.
  • Complete necessary documentation for project compliance, including permits and inspection reports.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; completion of an electrical apprenticeship or vocational training in wiring and electrical systems is preferred.
  • Prior experience as a wireman or in a related electrical field is advantageous.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings; knowledgeable in electrical theory and practices.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills to diagnose and resolve electrical issues quickly and effectively.
  • Ability to lift heavy materials, work in confined spaces, and perform physical tasks associated with electrical installations.
  • Strong focus on accuracy and detail to ensure high-quality workmanship and compliance with safety regulations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and communicate effectively with colleagues and clients.
