Overview

Warehouse workers play a crucial role in the logistics and supply chain industry by ensuring the efficient handling, storage, and distribution of goods within a warehouse or distribution center. They perform a variety of tasks to support the overall operation of the warehouse and facilitate the movement of products from receipt to shipment.


Duties

Receiving and Unloading:

  • Receive incoming shipments of goods, materials, and supplies from suppliers, carriers, or production facilities.
  • Unload delivery trucks, containers, or pallets using forklifts, pallet jacks, or other material handling equipment.

Inventory Management:

  • Organize and store received items in designated locations within the warehouse using appropriate storage methods and equipment.
  • Conduct regular cycle counts and inventory checks to maintain accurate inventory records and identify discrepancies or shortages.

Order Picking and Packing:

  • Retrieve items from storage locations based on pick lists, work orders, or customer orders using handheld scanners or picking equipment.
  • Pack items securely and accurately according to customer specifications, ensuring proper labeling, packaging, and documentation.

Shipping and Loading:

  • Prepare shipping documents, such as bills of lading, packing lists, and shipping labels, to accompany outgoing shipments.
  • Load outgoing shipments onto delivery trucks or transport vehicles, ensuring proper stacking, weight distribution, and securing of goods.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and carrying heavy objects, standing for extended periods, and operating warehouse equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks.
  • Strong attention to detail to accurately inspect, count, and label incoming and outgoing goods, as well as to maintain inventory records and ensure order accuracy.
  • Effective organizational skills to manage inventory, prioritize tasks, and keep the warehouse clean, orderly, and efficient.
  • Basic communication skills to interact with coworkers, supervisors, and occasionally external contacts such as delivery drivers or suppliers.
