Overview

A Waiter, also known as a server, is responsible for providing attentive and efficient service to restaurant patrons. They play a crucial role in ensuring a positive dining experience by taking orders, delivering food and beverages, and attending to the needs of guests.


Duties

Customer Service:

  • Greet customers warmly, seat them at tables, and provide menus, utensils, and other dining essentials.
  • Assist patrons in selecting food and beverages, offering recommendations, and answering questions about menu items.

Order Taking and Processing:

  • Take orders accurately and efficiently, noting special requests, dietary restrictions, and modifications as requested by guests.
  • Input orders into the point-of-sale (POS) system, ensuring accuracy and timeliness in transmitting orders to the kitchen or bar.

Food and Beverage Service:

  • Serve food and drinks promptly and courteously, using proper serving techniques and presentation standards.
  • Monitor tables and anticipate needs of guests, such as refilling beverages, clearing plates, and providing additional condiments or utensils.

Upselling and Promotion:

  • Recommend appetizers, desserts, or specialty drinks to enhance the dining experience and increase sales revenue.
  • Promote daily specials, seasonal menu items, or promotional offers to guests, encouraging additional purchases.

Billing and Payment Processing:

  • Present bills to guests, itemizing charges and applying discounts or coupons as applicable.
  • Process payments accurately, including cash, credit card transactions, or electronic payments, and provide change or receipts as needed.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a waiter, server, or in customer service roles is preferred but not always required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with guests in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment, multitask, and prioritize tasks to meet the needs of guests.
  • Knowledge of restaurant procedures, menu items, and service standards to provide accurate information and recommendations to patrons.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in order taking, billing, and payment processing to ensure customer satisfaction and minimize errors.
  • Physical stamina and endurance to stand for long periods, carry trays, and lift or move heavy objects as needed.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by the restaurant's operating hours.
