Overview

A Stevedore, also known as a longshoreman or dockworker, is responsible for loading and unloading cargo from ships at ports and harbors. Stevedores handle a wide range of cargo, including containers, bulk goods, and general cargo, and play a crucial role in ensuring the efficient and safe movement of goods in and out of ships. The role involves the use of specialized equipment, teamwork, and adherence to safety protocols, as stevedores work in busy and often hazardous environments.

Duties

Loading and Unloading Cargo

  • Use heavy equipment such as cranes, forklifts, and conveyors to load and unload cargo from ships, ensuring it is handled safely and efficiently.
  • Secure cargo using ropes, chains, straps, or other methods to prevent shifting or damage during transportation.
  • Operate manual or automated cargo-handling equipment to position and stack containers and other cargo in the designated areas on the ship or on the dock.

Cargo Handling and Management

  • Identify and handle various types of cargo, including fragile, hazardous, or perishable goods, following established procedures for their safe handling.
  • Inspect cargo for any signs of damage during loading and unloading and report any issues to supervisors.
  • Sort and organize cargo in the correct order for efficient loading and unloading, ensuring compliance with the ship’s stowage plan.
  • Work with crew members to load cargo in a balanced and stable manner, maintaining the ship’s stability.

Use of Equipment

  • Operate various types of cargo-handling equipment, including cranes, hoists, slings, and pallet jacks, to move cargo safely and accurately.
  • Perform routine checks and maintenance of the equipment to ensure it is in good working condition.
  • Coordinate with crane operators, truck drivers, and other port personnel to move cargo efficiently and avoid delays.

Safety Compliance

  • Follow all safety regulations and guidelines while working on the docks or aboard ships, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) such as helmets, gloves, and high-visibility vests.
  • Be aware of potential hazards in the work environment, such as moving machinery, heavy cargo, and slippery surfaces, and take appropriate measures to mitigate risks.
  • Attend safety meetings, training, and drills to stay informed about safety procedures and emergency protocols.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas to prevent accidents and injuries.

Teamwork and Communication

  • Work closely with other stevedores, crane operators, ship crew, and port supervisors to ensure smooth and coordinated cargo operations.
  • Communicate effectively with team members using hand signals, radios, or other communication tools to provide directions and updates during loading and unloading processes.
  • Assist in planning the sequence of operations for loading and unloading, taking into account the type of cargo, weather conditions, and port schedules.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of cargo loaded and unloaded, including quantities, weights, and any damages or discrepancies.
  • Report any issues or delays in the loading/unloading process to supervisors and take corrective actions as necessary.
  • Assist with inventory control by ensuring that cargo is stored and accounted for properly.

Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is typically required. On-the-job training is usually provided, though experience with heavy machinery or in a shipping-related role is an advantage.
  • Experience in manual labor, machinery operation, or a warehouse environment is beneficial. Familiarity with port operations or shipping processes is a plus.
  • Certification in operating forklifts, cranes, or other heavy equipment may be required depending on the port or employer. Additional safety training or certifications, such as hazardous materials handling, can be advantageous.
  • Physical stamina and strength to handle heavy loads and perform manual labor over long shifts.
  • Attention to detail to ensure cargo is loaded and secured correctly, and to identify any damage or safety concerns.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills to coordinate with other stevedores and port personnel.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment and handle complex machinery safely and efficiently.
  • Problem-solving skills to address issues that may arise during cargo handling operations.
