Overview

Sommeliers are wine experts responsible for ordering wine, creating the restaurant's wine list and meeting with customers to help them understand the wine they're drinking. A sommelier might also recommend wine and food pairings for guests. As a service professional, a sommelier can help a customer select a wine that enhances their eating experience.


Duties

Selection and Management

  • Curate and manage an extensive wine list, ensuring a diverse selection that complements the restaurant's menu and guest preferences. Regularly update the wine list to reflect seasonal changes, new arrivals, and trends in the wine industry. Develop relationships with wine distributors and producers to source unique and high-quality wines.

Pairing

  • Collaborate with the culinary team to create harmonious wine pairings for menu items. Provide personalized wine recommendations to guests based on their tastes and meal choices, enhancing their dining experience.

Education

  • Educate restaurant staff on wine characteristics, tasting notes, and proper service techniques. Conduct training sessions and tastings to foster a deeper understanding of wine among team members.

Guest Interaction

  • Engage with guests to discuss wine options, answer questions, and provide insights into the wine selection process. Create a welcoming atmosphere by sharing your passion for wine and making guests feel comfortable exploring new options.

Service Excellence

  • Ensure that wine is served at the proper temperature and in appropriate glassware, following established service standards. Monitor wine service throughout the meal, ensuring guests have everything they need to enhance their experience.

Inventory Management

  • Track wine inventory levels and conduct regular audits to ensure proper stock levels and minimize waste. Implement effective storage solutions to maintain the quality and integrity of the wine collection.

Tasting Events

  • Organize and lead wine tasting events and special wine dinners, promoting the restaurant’s offerings and enhancing guest engagement. Develop promotional materials and marketing strategies to highlight featured wines and events.

Compliance and Safety

  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations related to wine storage and service. Stay informed about legal regulations concerning alcohol service and ensure compliance with local laws.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in hospitality management, culinary arts, or a related field preferred.
  • Certification from a recognized sommelier program (e.g., Court of Master Sommeliers, Wine & Spirit Education Trust) is highly desirable.
  • Previous experience as a Sommelier or in a similar role within a fine dining restaurant is essential.
  • Extensive knowledge of wines, including varietals, regions, and food pairings.
  • Strong palate with the ability to identify flavors, aromas, and quality in wines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage guests and staff effectively.
  • Ability to stand for long periods and lift heavy cases of wine (up to 50 pounds).
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
