Overview

A Ship Repair Technician is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and refurbishment of various types of vessels, including commercial ships, naval vessels, yachts, and offshore platforms. This role demands in-depth technical knowledge of marine systems, welding, mechanical repairs, and general ship maintenance practices. The primary focus is to ensure that vessels are safe, seaworthy, and compliant with all relevant maritime regulations.


Duties

Diagnosing and Assessing Damage

  • Inspect ships for damage, wear, or malfunction.
  • Conduct thorough assessments to determine the scope of repairs required, including structural, mechanical, and electrical issues.
  • Collaborate with ship engineers, surveyors, and other technical personnel to identify the necessary repairs and maintenance tasks.

Repair and Maintenance

  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, including lubrication, cleaning, and replacement of worn parts.
  • Conduct welding and metal fabrication to repair hulls, decks, and other structural components.
  • Install, repair, and replace marine systems such as propulsion units, steering systems, engines, pumps, and electrical systems.
  • Conduct corrosion prevention techniques like sandblasting and painting to maintain the integrity of the vessel.
  • Overhaul and service mechanical and electrical systems, including plumbing, fuel systems, ventilation, and fire suppression equipment.

Welding and Fabrication

  • Carry out skilled welding operations such as MIG, TIG, and arc welding to repair structural components of the vessel.
  • Fabricate and fit metal parts, plates, and reinforcements as needed for repairs.
  • Ensure compliance with maritime safety standards during welding and fabrication work.
  • Problem Solving and Troubleshooting
  • Use advanced diagnostic tools and techniques to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems. Identify the root causes of failures and implement effective solutions to ensure vessel functionality.

Collaborating with Teams

  • Work alongside engineers, electricians, painters, and other marine professionals to complete complex repair projects.
  • Maintain open communication with supervisors and ship owners to provide updates on the progress of repairs.
  • Ensure all tasks are performed within the assigned deadlines and budgetary constraints.

Safety and Compliance

  • Adhere to strict safety regulations while working in shipyards, dry docks, or onboard vessels.
  • Ensure compliance with maritime regulations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards, SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea), and classification societies' requirements (e.g., ABS, Lloyd's Register).
  • Safeguard the workplace by following proper personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols, risk assessments, and safety drills.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Keep accurate records of all maintenance and repair activities performed.
  • Prepare reports detailing the extent of repairs, parts used, and recommendations for future maintenance.
  • Maintain an inventory of spare parts, tools, and equipment.

Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of marine systems, ship structures, propulsion, and auxiliary systems.
  • Skilled in the use of hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and welding machines.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical issues onboard vessels.
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces, at heights, and in various weather conditions.
  • Relevant trade certifications in marine technology, welding, or mechanical engineering are required.
  • Prior experience working in shipyards, dry docks, or onboard ships is highly valued.
