Overview
A Roofer is responsible for installing, repairing, or replacing roofs on residential, commercial, or industrial buildings. They play a vital role in ensuring the structural integrity, weatherproofing, and durability of roofs, protecting buildings from the elements and maintaining occupants' safety and comfort.
Duties
Roof Installation:
- Interpret architectural plans, specifications, or work orders to determine roofing requirements, materials, and installation methods for new construction or roof replacement projects.
- Install roofing materials, such as shingles, tiles, metal panels, or built-up roofing systems, following manufacturer instructions, industry standards, and safety regulations.
Surface Preparation:
- Prepare roof surfaces for installation by cleaning, repairing, or replacing damaged or deteriorated materials, including sheathing, underlayment, flashing, or insulation.
- Apply waterproofing membranes, underlayment, or adhesives to roof decks, slopes, or penetrations to prevent water infiltration and ensure a watertight seal.
Roof Repair and Maintenance:
- Inspect roofs for leaks, damage, or deterioration, identifying areas requiring repair, replacement, or maintenance, such as missing shingles, damaged flashing, or worn-out sealants.
- Perform repairs or replacements on roofing components, including patching leaks, replacing damaged shingles or tiles, and resealing flashing or vents to restore roof integrity and performance.
Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to safety regulations, procedures, and guidelines for working at heights, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), fall protection systems, and ladder safety practices.
- Maintain a safe work environment on the job site, implementing hazard controls, securing tools and materials, and following safe work practices to prevent accidents, injuries, or property damage.
Team Collaboration:
- Collaborate with roofing crew members, contractors, or subcontractors to coordinate roofing activities, distribute tasks, and ensure efficient workflow and productivity.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, project managers, or clients to provide updates on project progress, discuss technical issues, and address client concerns or preferences.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent education is typically required, with additional vocational training, apprenticeship, or certification in roofing or construction trades preferred.
- Proven experience working as a roofer in residential, commercial, or industrial settings, with expertise in roof installation, repair, and maintenance techniques, as well as familiarity with various roofing materials and systems.
- Knowledge of roofing materials, such as asphalt shingles, clay tiles, metal panels, or single-ply membranes, as well as understanding of roof design principles, ventilation requirements, and weatherproofing techniques.
- Physical stamina and agility to work at heights, lift and maneuver heavy materials, and perform repetitive tasks, as well as the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Problem-solving abilities and the ability to troubleshoot roofing issues, identify root causes of leaks or damage, and implement effective repair or replacement solutions.
- Communication skills and teamwork abilities to collaborate with coworkers, supervisors, and clients, as well as follow instructions, provide feedback, and contribute to a positive work environment.
