Overview

Duties

Assessment and Evaluation

  • Inspect and evaluate damaged or worn wooden items to determine the extent of restoration needed.
  • Identify the original materials, finishes, and construction techniques used in antique or vintage pieces.

Repair and Restoration

  • Perform repairs on broken or damaged wooden components using appropriate techniques such as gluing, clamping, and reinforcing.
  • Replace missing or damaged parts, such as legs, drawer fronts, or structural supports, using matched materials.
  • Remove old finishes (e.g., paint, varnish) safely and effectively, preparing surfaces for refinishing.

Refinishing

  • Sand and smooth surfaces to prepare them for finishing, ensuring an even base for the application of new finishes.
  • Apply stains, paints, varnishes, or other finishes to restore the original color and sheen of the wood.
  • Use techniques such as glazing, toning, or distressing to match historical styles and aesthetics.

Craftsmanship and Detailing

  • Employ fine woodworking skills to replicate intricate details, carvings, or inlays that may have been lost or damaged.
  • Use specialized tools and equipment to achieve precise cuts, joints, and finishes.
  • Ensure high standards of craftsmanship and attention to detail in all restoration work.

Historical Research

  • Research historical styles, techniques, and materials to ensure authenticity in restoration projects.
  • Consult reference materials or experts in historical woodworking to understand specific restoration requirements.

Documentation

  • Maintain detailed records of restoration processes, including methods used, materials sourced, and any modifications made.
  • Provide clients with before-and-after documentation, including photographs, to showcase the restoration work completed.

Client Communication

  • Work closely with clients to understand their restoration needs, preferences, and budget.

Shop Maintenance

Qualifications:
