Overview
A Packer is responsible for preparing products for shipment by carefully packing them into containers or boxes. They play a critical role in ensuring that items are packed securely, labeled accurately, and ready for distribution to customers or retailers.
Duties
Packing Operations:
- Receive orders or packing instructions and select appropriate packaging materials based on product specifications and shipping requirements.
- Carefully pack items into boxes or containers, ensuring proper arrangement, padding, and protection to prevent damage during transit.
Quality Assurance:
- Inspect products for defects, damage, or discrepancies before packing, removing any defective items or notifying supervisors of quality issues.
- Verify accuracy of packing slips, labels, or shipping documents, ensuring that all items are packed according to customer orders or specifications.
Labeling and Documentation:
- Affix shipping labels, barcodes, or tracking numbers to packed boxes or containers, ensuring that they are legible and correctly positioned.
- Prepare packing slips, invoices, or shipping documents to accompany outgoing shipments, recording product quantities, descriptions, and destinations.
Inventory Management:
- Maintain accurate records of packed items, inventory levels, and shipping supplies, updating inventory systems or databases as needed.
- Assist with periodic inventory counts and reconciliations to ensure inventory accuracy and prevent stock shortages or overages.
Safety and Compliance:
- Follow safety protocols and guidelines to prevent accidents, injuries, and hazards in the packing area.
- Adhere to company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements for packaging, labeling, and handling of hazardous materials or restricted items.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in packing, shipping, warehousing, or a related field is beneficial but not always required.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in packing items and labeling packages.
- Basic math skills for counting, measuring, and recording product quantities.
- Ability to follow instructions, work efficiently in a fast-paced environment, and meet productivity targets.
- Physical stamina and strength to lift, carry, and maneuver heavy boxes or containers.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate with coworkers and follow instructions from supervisors.
- Flexibility to work varied shifts, including evenings, weekends, and overtime as needed.
