Overview

Metal Cutting Workers are responsible for using various cutting tools and machinery to shape and cut metal materials according to specifications for manufacturing or construction projects. They play a critical role in ensuring that metal components are accurately produced for assembly into larger structures or products.


Duties

Cutting and Shaping Metal

  • Utilize cutting tools such as saws, lasers, plasma cutters, or water jet cutters to cut metal sheets, bars, and other forms to specific dimensions. Set up machines, including adjusting settings and calibration tools to ensure precision in cutting processes. Choose appropriate materials and gauge based on project requirements, ensuring quality and compatibility with intended use.

Quality Control

  • Inspect cut materials for accuracy, quality, and adherence to specifications using measuring tools like calipers, gauges, and micrometers. Make necessary adjustments to cutting processes or machinery based on inspection results, ensuring high standards of quality are maintained.

Safety Compliance

  • Adhere to all safety guidelines and regulations, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, goggles, and ear protection. Identify and report any safety hazards or issues related to machinery or the work environment to supervisors.

Maintenance and Documentation

  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on cutting equipment to ensure optimal performance, including cleaning, lubricating, and replacing worn parts. Maintain accurate records of production activities, including materials used, quantities cut, and any defects or issues encountered.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with other production team members, including welders, fabricators, and supervisors, to ensure seamless operations and timely project completion. Provide feedback on production processes and suggest improvements to enhance efficiency and quality.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training or apprenticeship in metalworking, machining, or a related field is preferred.
  • Previous experience as a metal cutting worker or in a manufacturing environment is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in operating cutting machinery and tools; familiarity with blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications.
  • Strong mathematical skills for precise measurements and calculations.
  • Ability to lift heavy materials and stand for extended periods; comfort with working in a shop environment.
