Overview

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of heavy machinery and equipment used in construction, mining, and other industrial applications. This role requires a thorough understanding of mechanical systems, electrical systems, and hydraulic systems. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and quality workmanship.


Duties

Diagnosis and Troubleshooting

  • Inspect, diagnose, and troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues in heavy equipment such as bulldozers, excavators, cranes, and loaders.
  • Utilize diagnostic tools and equipment to identify faults and determine appropriate repair procedures.

Repair and Maintenance

  • Perform repairs and maintenance on heavy equipment, including engines, transmissions, brakes, and hydraulic systems.
  • Replace or repair defective parts, components, and systems in a timely and efficient manner.

Preventive Maintenance

  • Conduct routine preventive maintenance checks and services on equipment to ensure optimal performance and compliance with safety standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs performed, and parts used, ensuring all documentation is up to date.

Equipment Operation

  • Operate heavy machinery to test and ensure proper functioning after repairs or maintenance are completed.
  • Assist in moving equipment to and from job sites as needed.

Safety Compliance

  • Follow all safety protocols and guidelines while performing maintenance and repair tasks to minimize risks and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Participate in safety meetings and training to remain informed about best practices and procedures.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with other mechanics, operators, and supervisors to coordinate maintenance activities and address equipment issues.
  • Communicate effectively regarding project progress, challenges, and any changes in work scope or procedures.

Inventory Management

  • Assist in managing inventory levels of parts and supplies, ensuring that necessary materials are on hand for repairs and maintenance.
  • Order parts and materials as needed, maintaining relationships with suppliers for efficient procurement.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training or certification in heavy equipment mechanics or a related field is preferred.
  • Prior experience as a heavy equipment mechanic or in a similar role in the construction or industrial sector is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems in heavy machinery.
  • Strong knowledge of safety practices and regulations in maintenance and repair.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Physical stamina and strength, with the ability to lift heavy objects and work in various environmental conditions.
  • Strong work ethic and reliability, with a commitment to quality and safety.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
