Overview
The Fiber Optic Splicer and Cable Layer is responsible for installing, splicing, and maintaining fiber optic cables to ensure efficient telecommunications infrastructure. They play a crucial role in deploying and maintaining high-speed internet, phone, and television services, as well as supporting networking systems in various industries.
Duties
# Cable Installation:
- Assist in the installation of fiber optic cables in various environments including aerial, underground, and indoor settings.
- Ensure proper routing and management of cables to meet project specifications and industry standards.
# Fusion Splicing:
- Perform fusion splicing of fiber optic cables to ensure low-loss connections.
- Utilize fusion splicing equipment and techniques to achieve reliable and durable splices.
# Connectorization:
- Terminate fiber optic cables with connectors using precision techniques.
- Inspect and test connector terminations to ensure proper alignment and signal integrity.
# Testing and Troubleshooting:
- Conduct comprehensive testing of fiber optic cables using optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) and other testing equipment.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose fiber optic network issues, implementing corrective actions as needed.
# Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate documentation of cable installations, splicing, and testing activities.
- Generate reports detailing project progress, test results, and any issues encountered.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience in fiber optic cable installation and splicing.
- Proficiency in fusion splicing techniques and equipment.
- Strong understanding of fiber optic connectorization and termination.
- Experience with fiber optic testing equipment such as OTDRs and power meters.
- Excellent troubleshooting skills and ability to solve complex problems.
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with colleagues.
- Relevant certifications such as CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician) or equivalent are a plus.
