Overview
The Fiber Optic Splicer and Cable Layer is responsible for installing, splicing, and maintaining fiber optic cables to ensure efficient telecommunications infrastructure. They play a crucial role in deploying and maintaining high-speed internet, phone, and television services, as well as supporting networking systems in various industries.
Duties
Cable Installation:
- Lay out, route, and install fiber optic cables in underground conduits, aerial routes, or building structures according to engineering plans and specifications.
- Use specialized tools and equipment to pull, place, and secure fiber optic cables, ensuring proper tension, support, and protection from environmental factors.
Fusion Splicing:
- Splice fiber optic cables together using fusion splicing techniques to create continuous, low-loss connections.
- Prepare cable ends, strip protective coatings, align fiber cores, and apply fusion splicing equipment to join fibers securely and accurately.
Connectorization:
- Terminate fiber optic cables with connectors or splicing enclosures, ensuring proper alignment, cleanliness, and protection of fiber ends.
- Test and verify connector terminations using optical power meters, light sources, and visual inspection tools to ensure optimal performance and signal integrity.
Testing and Troubleshooting:
- Perform optical fiber testing and troubleshooting using OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) and other testing equipment to identify faults, losses, or signal degradation.
- Analyze test results, locate faults, and implement corrective actions to restore or improve fiber optic system performance.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of cable installations, splicing activities, test results, and network configurations.
- Generate installation reports, as-built drawings, and documentation for customer records, project handover, and future maintenance.
Qualifications
- Previous experience as a fiber optic splicer or cable technician, with knowledge of fiber optic cable installation, splicing, and testing techniques.
- Certification or training in fiber optic splicing and network installation preferred (e.g., CFOT, FOA).
- Proficiency in using fusion splicing equipment, fiber cleavers, OTDRs, and other fiber optic testing tools.
- Understanding of telecommunications infrastructure, networking principles, and industry standards (e.g., ANSI/TIA, ISO/IEC).
- Physical fitness and ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in various weather conditions.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to follow technical specifications and safety protocols.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with team members, engineers, and project stakeholders.
The Fiber Optic Splicer and Cable Layer position requires a skilled individual who can effectively install, splice, and maintain fiber optic cables, ensuring reliable telecommunications infrastructure and network connectivity for residential, commercial, and industrial applications.
