Overview

An excavator operator is a professional who uses heavy construction machinery such as excavators, bulldozers, and forklifts. They work on construction sites, development projects, and other outdoor settings, moving earth, rock, and debris. These operators also perform routine maintenance on vehicles and machines, and may be responsible for documentation and record-keeping. A valid driver's license, heavy rigid license, and an excavator ticket are often required. They must be able to coordinate machine actions with other activities, positioning or moving loads as directed. Experience in operating various types of heavy equipment and a strong understanding of safety regulations are essential.


Duties

Digging and Trenching

  • They operate hydraulic or cable-operated excavators to dig holes, trenches, and foundations according to project specifications.
  • Maintenance
  • Routine maintenance is crucial. Operators ensure that their excavator machinery runs smoothly by handling tasks like lubrication, refueling, and cleaning.

Blueprint Interpretation

  • They read and interpret site plans and blueprints to determine precise excavation locations and depths.
  • Coordination
  • Excavator operators coordinate with other construction team members to align excavation activities with project timelines and safety protocols.

Equipment Adjustments

  • Depending on the task, they adjust attachments and equipment settings—for example, changing buckets or configuring hydraulic breakers.

Site Management

  • Operators monitor the excavation site to prevent over-digging, maintain proper slope grades, and ensure nearby structures’ structural integrity.

Adaptability

  • They work in various weather conditions, adapting their techniques to handle mud, rock, or any other challenging materials effectively.

Documentation

  • Daily work activities are documented, including hours of operation, maintenance tasks, and any deviations from planned excavation activities.

Qualification:

  • Must have worked in different street environments not just bulk earthworks.
  • Must have experience of digging up footpaths avoiding cables.
  • Overseas experience
  • Proven experience and understanding of Health and Safety and the hazards of operating on construction sites.
  • A good level of physical fitness due to the physical nature of the role
  • Able to pass a Drug test.
  • A solution-focused attitude, with strong forward planning and adaptability.
  • Must have a good level of spoken and written English.
  • Have good customer relation skills, remaining calm and controlled even when the pressure is on.
