Overview

An Electric Welder, also known as an Arc Welder, is responsible for joining metal parts together using electric arc welding processes. They play a crucial role in manufacturing, construction, and repair projects, ensuring the structural integrity and quality of welded components.


Duties

Welding Operations:

  • Interpret blueprints, drawings, and welding symbols to determine welding requirements and specifications.
  • Set up welding equipment, including welding machines, electrodes, and safety gear, in accordance with welding procedures.

Metal Preparation:

  • Prepare metal surfaces for welding by cleaning, grinding, and beveling to remove contaminants and achieve proper fit-up.
  • Position and secure metal parts or assemblies using clamps, jigs, and fixtures to maintain alignment during welding.

Electric Arc Welding:

  • Perform electric arc welding using manual, semi-automatic, or automatic techniques to join metal components.
  • Strike and maintain an electric arc between the welding electrode and the workpiece, creating a molten pool that solidifies to form a welded joint.

Quality Control:

  • Inspect welded joints for defects, such as cracks, porosity, or incomplete fusion, using visual inspection or non-destructive testing methods.
  • Repair or rework defective welds to meet quality standards and specifications.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Follow safety procedures and regulations to prevent accidents, injuries, and hazardous exposures during welding operations.
  • Adhere to welding codes, standards, and best practices to ensure the integrity and durability of welded structures.

Qualifications

  • Certification or training in electric arc welding techniques and procedures from a recognized institution.
  • Proven experience as an electric welder or arc welder in a manufacturing, construction, or industrial setting.
  • Proficiency in using welding equipment, tools, and materials.
  • Knowledge of welding processes, metallurgy, and materials properties.
  • Attention to detail and precision in welding operations and quality control.
  • Physical strength and stamina to perform welding tasks, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
