Overview

Duties

Loading and Unloading Cargo

  • Safely load and unload cargo from ships, trucks, and railcars using forklifts, cranes, and other machinery.
  • Ensure that cargo is handled carefully to prevent damage and ensure proper weight distribution during transport.

Sorting and Storing Goods

  • Organize and store cargo in designated areas of the dock or warehouse according to the type of goods and shipping requirements.
  • Use inventory management systems to track cargo movements and maintain accurate records.

Operating Equipment

  • Operate heavy machinery and equipment, such as forklifts, pallet jacks, and cranes, to move cargo efficiently.
  • Perform routine maintenance and safety checks on equipment to ensure proper functioning.

Safety Compliance

  • Adhere to safety protocols and regulations to maintain a safe working environment for all employees.
  • Participate in safety training and drills to stay updated on best practices and emergency procedures.

Documentation

  • Complete necessary paperwork, including bills of lading, shipping manifests, and inventory reports.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and other staff to resolve discrepancies or issues related to cargo.

Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with other dock workers, supervisors, and shipping personnel to coordinate operations and ensure timely loading and unloading of goods.
  • Communicate effectively with team members to address issues and optimize workflow.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • Specific training or certification in operating heavy machinery will be beneficial.
  • Previous experience in warehousing, logistics, or a related field is required.
  • The position involves significant physical labor, including lifting heavy objects, standing for long periods, and working in various weather conditions. Workers must be physically fit and able to handle the demands of the job.
  • Ability to accurately follow instructions and maintain precise records.
  • Capability to work well in a team environment and communicate effectively with colleagues.
  • Quick thinking to address and resolve issues as they arise.
  • Familiarity with operating loading equipment and basic computer skills for inventory management.
