A CNC Turning/Milling Machine Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining computer numerical control (CNC) machines used in manufacturing processes. They play a crucial role in producing precision-machined components and parts for various industries.
Duties
Machine Setup:
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications to understand machining requirements.
- Set up CNC turning or milling machines by installing tooling, fixtures, and workpieces according to job instructions.
Programming and Operation:
- Write or load CNC programs into the machine control unit (MCU) to execute machining operations such as turning, milling, drilling, and tapping.
- Operate CNC machines to produce components with precise dimensions, surface finishes, and tolerances.
Tooling and Tool Changes:
- Select appropriate cutting tools, inserts, and tool holders based on machining requirements and material properties.
- Monitor tool wear and perform tool changes, adjustments, or replacements as needed to maintain quality and efficiency.
Quality Control:
- Inspect machined parts using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges to verify dimensions and tolerances.
- Monitor machining processes for deviations, defects, or anomalies and make adjustments to maintain quality standards.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting:
- Perform routine maintenance tasks on CNC machines, including cleaning, lubricating, and inspecting components for wear or damage.
- Troubleshoot machine malfunctions, programming errors, or tooling issues to minimize downtime and ensure continuous operation.
Qualifications
- Previous experience as a CNC machine operator, particularly in turning or milling operations.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, and CNC programs.
- Knowledge of machining processes, tooling selection, and CNC machine operation.
- Familiarity with precision measuring instruments and quality control techniques.
- Ability to perform machine setups, tool changes, and adjustments independently.
- Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot machine malfunctions and optimize machining processes.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in producing machined components to meet quality standards.
- Physical stamina and dexterity to stand, lift, and operate CNC machines for extended periods.
